Define the taxpayer, period and question first

A useful income-tax review starts with the person or entity involved, the relevant tax period and the matter requiring attention. A recurring return assignment, a transaction review and a response to an assessment query involve different information and responsibilities. Our New Delhi practice advises businesses, owners and private clients within an agreed scope. An initial discussion should identify income sources, important transactions, residence or overseas connections and any approaching deadline. A conclusion should follow the records and applicable provisions, rather than an assumption based on a headline or a prior-year position.

For a business, tax preparation should connect to the financial statements and supporting schedules. For an individual, the information may be spread across employers, banks, investment records and property documents. Completeness matters in both cases. The engagement should establish who compiles the records, who confirms factual declarations and who approves the final submission. If the year contains a sale, restructuring, overseas income or another unusual item, raise it at the beginning. A transaction that is small in the accounts can still require a separate technical review.

Prepare a reconciled information pack

An organised tax file preserves the link between source documents, the accounting or income summary and the position taken in the return. Differences in tax statements, withholding records or prior-year balances should be investigated and recorded. A review can identify information gaps and questions for management or the taxpayer, but it should not silently treat missing information as confirmation. Where a choice or claim depends on conditions, those conditions need a factual review. Potential options should be compared using the complete circumstances, not only the nominal tax rate.

Recurring support can include information requests, computation review, return preparation and coordination of agreed TDS work. Each item should be identified in the engagement terms. Tax advice on a new transaction, litigation or a complex notice may require a separate mandate. Timelines depend on record readiness, clarifications and the relevant procedure. Filing dates and extensions should be checked for the actual category of taxpayer and period. The website’s general preparation material is not a personalised due-date determination.

Useful starting records

  • The relevant financial statements, trial balance or a complete summary of income sources.
  • Tax statements, withholding certificates, advance-tax and self-assessment payment records.
  • Prior returns, computations, carried-forward schedules and relevant orders or correspondence.
  • Documents supporting material asset sales, investments, loans and exceptional transactions.
  • Details of overseas income, assets, ownership or residence questions requiring review.
  • Notices and communications in full, together with the latest response date and earlier replies.

Respond to a notice with an evidence trail

A notice should be read with the complete return history and supporting records. We can assist with an agreed review of the questions, preparation of an information matrix and drafting of a response supported by the available evidence. Factual explanations should be approved by the client, and unresolved differences should remain visible. A response is not an assurance of a particular assessment outcome. The authority’s procedure, further questions and decision remain outside the firm’s control, and any representation is subject to the accepted mandate and professional requirements.

Common preparation gaps include omitted income sources, incomplete transaction dates, inconsistent opening balances and reliance on a bank entry without the underlying contract. NRI and cross-border matters may also require international taxation and FEMA reviews. A well-scoped assignment identifies those interfaces early. Use the year-end tax checklist to organise records, and check the official update hub for source announcements. Bring the relevant document and your circumstances to the discussion before relying on a general update.

How we scope and coordinate the work

An initial enquiry is used to understand the requirement, relevant jurisdictions and timing. The firm then considers engagement acceptance and identifies the information needed for a defined scope. Deliverables, client responsibilities, communication arrangements and fees are agreed separately before professional work begins. Where more than one service is required, the workstreams should share a consistent set of facts while keeping their responsibilities clear.

For a productive first discussion, explain the decision you need to make and any deadline already set by an authority, bank or group team. Identify records that are missing and advisers already involved. Do not send passwords, identity documents or confidential client files through a general enquiry. Once an engagement and information needs are agreed, the firm can coordinate an appropriate route for supporting records. Advice and timelines depend on the circumstances; a website guide does not create an engagement or guarantee an outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Can a notice be reviewed before agreeing a representation assignment?

An initial scope discussion can identify the notice, period, information needed and deadline. Any detailed review or representation begins after engagement acceptance and agreement of responsibilities.

Should a major transaction be discussed before return preparation?

Yes. Share the nature and timing of the transaction early so that the required factual and technical review can be identified. Do not assume that return preparation alone covers transaction advice.

Can a tax position be determined from a website update?

A source announcement is a starting point. Its effective date, conditions, amendments and application to the taxpayer must be checked before a position is adopted.
